🍂 5 Fall Decorating Mistakes to Avoid
Fall decorating should be fun. It’s our chance to bring out the pumpkins, add cozy textures, hang a beautiful wreath, and make our homes feel warm and welcoming.
But have you ever started decorating and suddenly thought, “Something just doesn’t look right?”
Welcome back to Fall Nesting Fridays with Nesting By Robin! This week, I thought we’d have a little fun and talk about five common fall decorating mistakes—and, more importantly, some simple ways to fix them.
And remember, these aren’t decorating rules. Your home should always reflect what you love.
🍁 Mistake #1: Using Too Much of Everything
I know how tempting this one is! You pull out all those beautiful pumpkins, signs, florals, candles, and fall treasures, and before you know it…they’re everywhere.
Sometimes, though, adding more décor actually makes it harder to notice the pieces you really love.
Try this instead: Choose a few focal points in each room. A beautiful faux floral arrangement on your dining table, a seasonal display on the mantel, or a wreath on your front door may be all you need.
Give your favorite pieces a little room to shine.
🎃 Mistake #2: Thinking Fall Has to Be Orange
Don’t get me wrong—I love traditional autumn orange! But fall decorating can be so much more.
Try mixing traditional colors with cream, burgundy, plum, sage green, dusty blue, mustard, terracotta, or warm neutrals.
Even something as simple as adding a few cream pumpkins to your traditional fall décor can completely refresh the look.
Robin’s Tip: Look at the colors already in your home and build your fall palette around them. Your seasonal décor will feel like it belongs instead of looking like it was simply added on top.
🌻 Mistake #3: Forgetting About Texture
Color gets a lot of attention when we’re decorating, but texture is what makes fall feel cozy.
If everything has the same finish or texture, your display can feel a little flat.
Mix smooth pumpkins with rustic grapevine, soft ribbon with natural wood, faux florals with greenery, and woven baskets with cozy fabrics.
Some of my favorite fall textures include burlap, grapevine, eucalyptus, berries, branches, velvet ribbon, baskets, wood, and chunky throws.
It’s those layers that give autumn decorating its warm, collected feeling.
🏡 Mistake #4: Decorating Every Space the Same Way
You don’t need pumpkins on every table or matching arrangements in every room.
Instead, let each area have its own little fall moment.
Your front door might feature a statement wreath. Your entryway could have a small arrangement and pumpkin. Your kitchen might only need a seasonal towel and a little floral accent. Your living room could get cozy with pillows, throws, and a basket.
Repeating two or three colors throughout your home will tie everything together without making every space look identical.
🍂 Mistake #5: Following Trends Instead of Your Heart
This may be the biggest one of all.
Every season brings new decorating trends. One year it’s neutrals, the next it’s moody colors, vintage pieces, or bold patterns.
Trends are wonderful for inspiration, but they shouldn’t determine what you love.
If bright orange pumpkins make you happy, use them.
If you adore a turquoise pumpkin wreath, hang it proudly.
If your heart belongs to burgundy mums and rustic grapevine, that’s your fall style.
Your home doesn’t need to look like a magazine or someone else’s social media page.
It needs to feel like home to you.
🧡 Bonus Tip: Don’t Forget Your Front Door
I couldn’t talk about fall decorating without mentioning the front door!
Your entryway sets the tone before anyone even walks inside. A handcrafted fall wreath, a few pumpkins, mums, and perhaps a lantern can create a beautiful welcome without requiring an elaborate porch makeover.
Start with your wreath and pull one or two colors from it for the rest of your porch décor. It’s one of the easiest ways to create a coordinated look.
🍁 The Perfect Fall Home Isn’t Perfect
Maybe that’s the most important decorating tip of all.
A beautiful home doesn’t have to be perfectly styled.
It can have a pumpkin that’s slightly crooked, a blanket tossed over the sofa, and a wreath filled with unexpected colors.
What matters is how your home makes you feel.
